Identification of the letters, and the sound it makes. Phonics
It's so important for kids to move into partial alphabetic reading and writing, while they are in preschool, and before they go into Kindergarten.
Here's one of the scary "why that's true" things to know. By the end of the third grade, schools are done teaching kids to read. (yes there is still remedial ect) And by the fourth grade kids are now reading to learn.
Students that are behind in reading, at the fourth grade level, as much as half of what they are seeing and learning, doesn't make any sense at all to them.
You want your child to be able to really embrace their literacy skills and see success, and not be playing catch up if at all possible. You want your child to close out that third grade year as a reader.
And that starts a few years before, even before Kinder; learning the letters and the sounds they make.
Until next time, take care of you!
